Mary Ann Smith, affectionately known by most as 'Betty', was born February 5, 1941 in Lunenburg County to parents Walter Smith, Sr. and Annie Mae Boyd Smith;
Many of her 82 years of life were poured out in service - as a devoted and beloved caretaker to those who needed her nurturing touch, as a faithful deaconess within Blackwell Temple AME Zion church and in praise and worship through song with the many choirs and musicians she would travel with.
*Only two hobbies took a backseat to her love of talking on the phone, planting and growing her flowers, or 'playing in the dirt' as she called it, and completing crossword and word find puzzles.
Mary finished her race early morning August 2, 2023, at her home in Kenbridge, Virginia.
Mary completed her assignment and now passes the torch and light to her 4 children: 2 sons - Dwayne L Flagg (Vinnetta), Randy L Richardson (Yolanda) and 2 daughters - Devona L Hill and Nanette Richardson and her 6 surviving grandchildren.
Brandon M Hill, Dwashaun and Danaejah Flagg, Torian, Randi, and Madison Richardson and a beautiful great-granddaughter Raeleign.
As the oldest of 8, she also leaves to celebrate and praise God four surviving siblings: her brother Walter Smith and 3 sisters: Ethel L. Smith, Annie Sue King, and Patricia Smith.
She is also survived by one living aunt and one living uncle, a host of beloved nieces and nephews, and other dear and loving relatives and friends.
