Minister Lawrence W. Fowlkes Obituary (1944

Reverend Lawrence W. Fowlkes was born on May 28, 1944, to Walter Fowlkes, Sr. and Eva C. Fowlkes in Lunenburg County, Virginia. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Oak Grove Baptist church in Kenbridge, Virginia. He attended Lunenburg County public schools in Victoria, Virginia. After graduating, he decided to join the United States Airforce to serve his country. He fought in the Vietnam War. After he was discharged from the Airforce he lived in San Bernardino, California for many years. He stayed connected with his parents and returned home to help care for them after they became older in life. Lawrence started attending Oak Grove Baptist church where he grew up. He was very active in the church and enjoyed working in the church by serving on the Deacon board; teaching Sunday school and was church treasurer. Later, Lawrence was ordained into the ministry by Reverend John T. Boyd at Saint Matthew's Baptist Church in Kenbridge, Virginia. He also joined the Lunenburg County ministries. Reverend Fowlkes was not a Pastor at a particular church, but he shared the word throughout various churches in the community. On many occasions, he would preach at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Warfield, Virginia under the direction of Reverend Yvonne W. Bridgeforth. Reverend Fowlkes was employed at Railway Handle Company and then went to Virginia Marble where he retired. He also prepared taxes for many people in the community and lawn work until his health failed. Reverend Lawrence W. Fowlkes at the age of seventy-eight departed this life on November 16, 2022, to be with the Lord at Laurels of Willow Creek -Nursing Facility in Midlothian, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter, Sr., and Eva C. Fowlkes. He leaves to cherish his memories: one god-daughter, Danielle Eppes of Kenbridge, Virginia; one sister, Emma L. Crawley of Kenbridge, Virginia; one brother, Walter Fowlkes, Jr. of Mt. Vernon, New York; four nieces, Arlene D. Johnson, Alice P. Yancey (Melvin) both of Kenbridge, Virginia; Shirley Drummond (Cornelius) of Newport News, Virginia; Nedia Fowlkes of Yonkers, New York; three nephews, Edward Crawley, Jr. of Kenbridge, Virginia; Minister William Crawley (Yvette) of Chesapeake, Virginia and Jerrod Fowlkes of Mt. Vernon, New York; a close friend in the ministry, Reverend Yvonne W Bridgeforth; four great-nieces, six great-nephews and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
