“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
— 2 Timothy 4:7
Ollie W. Holmes was born April 17, 1937, in Victoria, Virginia, to the late James and Annie Mae Holmes. He was the sixth of ten children. Raised in Lunenburg County, Ollie received his education through the Lunenburg County Public School system. During his early years, he worked alongside his family on the farm, where he learned the value of hard work, family, and helping others. Ollie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at West Hill Baptist Church in Victoria, Virginia. His faith remained an important part of his life and guided him through the many seasons that followed. At a young age, Ollie relocated to New York City, where he lived for approximately fifty years. There, he met and married his first wife, Monnie Lawson Holmes, a native of North Carolina. Together, they built a life and shared many years of love and companionship.
While living in New York, Ollie enjoyed a long career with Ziff Davis, working in advertising for twenty-five years. He also remained active in church and faithfully served as a trustee, giving his time and talents in support of the ministry. As his health declined, Ollie returned to Virginia to be closer to family. He rededicated his life and service to West Hill Baptist Church, where he became a trustee and remained active in the ministry, offering encouragement and a helping hand whenever needed. After returning to Virginia, Ollie experienced the loss of his beloved wife, Monnie. In time, he reconnected with his childhood friend, Mary Lou Spencer. Their friendship grew into love and companionship, and the two chose to spend their remaining years together under God’s union through marriage. They shared another beautiful chapter of life together until her passing.
Anyone who knew Ollie knew that he loved to talk. He could strike up a conversation with just about anyone, sharing stories, advice, and lessons gathered over the years. Known for his upbeat spirit, love for God and family, and devotion to the New York Yankees, Ollie poured his love and guidance into generations of family and friends. He was especially known for his “fussing,” which came from a place of wisdom, concern, and love. Family will also remember one of his familiar sayings: “I’ll put you in the mind home!” It still brings a smile. His familiar conversations, helping hands, and infectious chuckle will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
On September 21, 2026, God called Ollie from labor to eternal rest. His life’s journey carried him from the farms of Lunenburg County to New York City and ultimately back home to Victoria. Through every chapter, he remained rooted in faith, family, hard work, and a desire to help others.
Ollie was preceded in death by his parents, James and Annie Mae Holmes; his first wife, Monnie Lawson Holmes; his wife, Mary Lou Spencer Holmes; and seven of his siblings. He leaves to cherish his memory his two surviving sisters, Adell Holmes Chaffin (Sam Sr.) and Lena Knight; six stepsons and one surviving stepdaughter; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, and friends.
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”
