With burial in the First Baptist Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Victoria, VA. Reverend Carlton O. Clark, Officiating.
Ovetta L. Staples was born on January 2, 1918 in Lunenburg County, Virginia to Ida and William (Buck) Love. She spent her teenage years in Lawrenceville, Virginia along with other beloved family members. Both of her parents, her sister Virginia Love Harris, 2 of her children, Thomas A. Love and George W. Staples Jr. and 3 grandchildren preceded her in death.
In February, 1955, Ovetta married the late George Washington Staples Sr. Ovetta has been active in church all her life. She served faithfully at Mount Bethel Baptist Church when her children were young. She served as President & V. President of the Missionary Circle for 35 years. Ovetta was baptized at Bethany Baptist Church and received her education at Bethany School. She was a member of the Pastor's Aid under Rev, Leroy Rhone. She continued to support both churches faithfully for many years.
She was a very talented woman. She loved quilting and many of those present today have one of her homemade quilts. She continued gardening up until last year when Jasper refused to plant any corn, because she would sneak out and plant green beans and lima beans between it and tomato plants in her flower bed. She loved to cook, and she was well known for her Blackberry Roll and homemade Pineapple Ice Cream. Even as recently as three weeks ago, when her grandchildren visited, it was nothing as wonderful as eating at "Granny's". It bought her great joy to be with her family.
She was very active and always ready to participate and help out. She was a member of the Lunenburg Senior Citizens group. She was an active volunteer with the TPCC Food Pantry. She loved to attend Banquets, cookouts, weddings etc. She loved to be on the go all the time for someone who never had a driver's license. When the music came on, she would pat those feet and she was ready to dance...cane and all. She always felt that her greatest achievement was to have lived to witness her 80th Birthday Celebration.
Even though Ovetta had a very large family, she still had her favorite people. Sylvania Hack was like a son to her and he felt anything "Momma wanted, Momma got." Since her daughters lived away, Donna Dagner was her daughter here in Virginia. She called on Donna to take care of her business and she and her children knew that they could depend on Donna. Sylvania & Donna loved her just as much and will miss her greatly for the love and wisdom gained from her. When she summoned them, they were at her beck and call!!
Ovetta lived a great life and walked into the open gate into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, July 26, where she will find happiness and rest. She is trusting God to give strength to those that she leaves to mourn; her 4 children, Jasper of Victoria; Louise (Charles) of Clinton, MD; Mickey of Victoria, VA; and Gracie of Temple Hills, MD; one Daughter in Law, Doris Staples; 33 grandchildren, 78 great grandchildren, 44 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, several caretakers past and present.
