Skuyler Jones Freeman Obituary (1941

Skuyler Jones Freeman was born on July 6, 1941 to Samuel and Alma Freeman of Kenbridge Virginia. The family attended the New Grove Baptist Church where he received his religious instruction. Growing up as a young man Skuyler graduated from Lunenburg High School and went on to attend Virginia State College. After three years he relocated to Newark, New Jersey where he completed his college education at Montclair State University, receiving a Bachelor's Degree of Science. He is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma. During his years in college he enlisted in the Virginia National Guard and upon his relocation his commission transferred to the New Jersey National Guard. He also participated in the civil rights movement including rallies led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Lunch Counter Sit- ins. Upon graduation Skuyler began his career in information technology (IT), working for Fanon Courier eventually retiring from Lucent Technologies, Inc. as a Computer Programmer and from IBM as an Electronics Engineer. In 1965 he met his wife to be Caroline Boyd and they courted for 8 months. He wrote a letter to her father asking for his permission to wed his daughter, which he granted and they were married on April 2, 1966. From this union came four children - three sons and one daughter. Their family worship home was Mt Olive Baptist Church. He would mentor kids in the Boys Scouts, coach the Brewers little league baseball team and counseled others in the IT field. Among his hobbies were boating, fishing and gardening. He was considered a jack of all trades from his automotive skills to his philanthropic endeavors. Skuyler Freeman departed this life on November 20, 2020. He is predeceased by his son Jason, by his parents (Samuel and Alma), his brother Harold, his brother Jerry and his sister Christine. He is survived by his wife Caroline Freeman, eldest son Skuyler Jr, son Gerald, daughter Carol Renee, daughter in-law Crystal, three grandsons Jalen, Julian and Josiah and host of relatives and friends.
