Celebrating the Life of Walter “Sonny Boy” Smith, Jr.

Walter “Sonny Boy” Smith, Jr. was born on November 25, 1942, to the late Walter Smith, Sr. and Annie Mae Boyd Smith. A lifelong resident of Kenbridge, Virginia, Walter lived a life rooted in family, faith, hard work, and the simple things that brought him joy.

On September 11, 2026, Walter peacefully transitioned from this life in his sleep at VCU Medical Center (MCV) in Richmond, Virginia, at the age of 83. During his final days, he was surrounded by the love and presence of his children, other family members, and friends.

Family was an important part of Walter’s life. He leaves to cherish his memory his two devoted children, Darrell Smith and Brandy Smith (Kenyatti); two beloved grandchildren, Devon Webb and Brooklyn Peterson; and one precious great-granddaughter, Ishe’ Webb.

He also leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Ethel Lee Smith and Patricia Stigall (Willie), along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, and friends.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Smith, Sr. and Annie Mae Boyd Smith, and his siblings, Mary Ann Smith, Annie Sue King, William “Bill” Smith, Pauline Smith, and Clarence Smith.

Walter was educated in the Lunenburg County Public Schools. A hardworking and dedicated man, he spent many years employed at the Charcoal Plant before later working at the Cigar Factory, from which he retired.

Walter was an active and faithful member of Blackwell Temple AME Church. His church and his faith were important parts of his life and reflected the strong roots he maintained in the community he called home throughout his 83 years.

Affectionately known as “Sonny Boy,” Walter enjoyed the outdoors and the company of family and friends. Some of his favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting, tending to his garden, and playing cards. Whether working with his hands, enjoying a good game of cards, or spending time with those he loved, Sonny Boy appreciated life’s familiar and meaningful moments.

Walter “Sonny Boy” Smith, Jr. spent his entire life in Kenbridge, building a legacy through his family, his work, his faith, and the relationships he formed along the way. His familiar presence, the stories shared, and the memories created over more than eight decades will remain with all who knew and loved him.

Though his earthly journey has ended, the love and memories he leaves behind will continue through his children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, siblings, extended family, and all whose lives he touched.

Rest peacefully, Daddy. Your work here is done, but your memory will live on in the hearts of your family forever.
